This song is inspired by a song I grew up singing at Quaker meeting: Lord Make Us Instruments of Your Peace. The original song is based on the English translation of "The Prayer of Saint Francis", made popular in the USA by the Quaker magazine Friend's Intelligencer in 1927, who falsely attributed the prayer to Saint Francis of Assisi.
The first line of each verse in "Peace Song" is a musical and lyrical quote from the original song.
Here are the lyrics:
Lord, Make us instruments of Your peace,
Where there is hatred, let Your love increase
Lord, make us instruments of Your peace,
Walls of pride and prejudice shall cease
When we are Your instruments of peace.
Where there is hatred, we will show his love
Where there is injury, we will never judge
Where there is striving, we will speak his peace
To the millions crying for release,
We will be His instruments of peace
Lord, Make us instruments of Your peace,
Where there is hatred, let your love increase
Lord, make us instruments of Your peace,
Walls of pride and prejudice shall cease
When we are Your instruments of peace.
Where there is blindness, we will pray for sight
where there is darkness, we will shine His light
Where there is sadness, we will bear their grief
To the millions crying for relief,
We will be Your instruments of peace.
lyrics
"Lord, make us instruments of Your peace" we sang.
The vibraphone, it rang the dissonant chords, arranged
to unsettle the way we think about peace.
"It's not an easy thing," I remember thinking.
Well, it'll take more than a couple altered chords,
and may well take much more before I make my mind up.
'Cause now that I am living for myself as well as someone else,
I have more than I'll give up.
"Lord, make us instruments of Your peace" I prayed
when I heard my father say, "Measure your love this way:
not by whether you would die for your lover,
but if you would make another die in place of her."
Well, it took more than a few words from my dad
to take stock in what I had. Now I can't make my mind up.
'Cause now that I am living for myself as well as someone else,
I have more than I'll give up.
"Lord, make us instruments of Your peace" rings out.
The courtroom silence, loud. Your mother makes a vow,
"I forgive you for this thing you have done, for taking my husband
from me, my daughter and sons."
Well, it'll take more than a drunk man in his car
and a family full of scars for me to make my mind up.
'Cause now that I am living for myself as well as someone else,
I have more than I'll give up.
