This song tends to have a polarizing effect on its listeners. It's always interesting to see who's offended and who's touched.
The first verse is about a deer I hit with my car, second verse is about a roommate of mine that died of a freak heart attack the first week of my junior year of college. The third verse is about my wife's father (who is also the father of this album's cornetist, Jonathan Roberts), who was killed by a drunk driver.
The chorus is the part that often offends people. The bulk of the chorus is from Matthew 6:26: Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
The last line, "when he's not watching them fall" is not meant sarcastically, but literally; God may feed the birds, but he lets them die. Consider this verse:
What is the price of two sparrows--one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. Matthew 10:29 NLT
If it upsets you to read a verse about God's providence back to back with a verse about God knowingly allowing the death of those God watches over, well, I don't know what to tell you, other than, "Yeah, me too."
lyrics
"Look at the birds of the air,
for they neither sew nor reap
nor gather food in barns,
yet your heavenly father feeds them"
when he's not watching them fall.
On highway 8, I saw your friend,
so I swerved around and hit you instead.
You lay there on the ground,
still making breathing sounds.
I chose to take your life away.
"Look at the birds of the air,
for they neither sew nor reap
nor gather food in barns,
yet your heavenly father feeds them"
when he's not watching them fall.
In David's room, he watched you die.
Your heart sped up, then stopped marking time.
You lay there on the ground,
you made no breathing sounds.
You had to give your life away.
"Look at the birds of the air,
for they neither sew nor reap
nor gather food in barns,
yet your heavenly father feeds them"
when he's not watching them fall.
I never met you, but through your sons
and daughter beautiful (whose heart I've won).
They tell your stories, friend,
they've survived your absence,
but fathers weren't meant to die that way.
"Look at the birds of the air,
for they neither sew nor reap
nor gather food in barns,
yet your heavenly father feeds them"
when he's not watching them fall.
